South Florida Chapter Surgical Community,
It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Dr. Juan Carlos Paramo, MD, a highly
respected surgical oncologist, educator, and leader whose impact on our South Florida
community will endure for years to come.
Dr. Paramo devoted more than 25 years to the practice of medicine, serving as an attending
surgeon in Surgical Oncology at Mount Sinai Medical Center’s Comprehensive Cancer Center in
Miami Beach. Throughout his distinguished career, he became known not only for his clinical
excellence and technical precision, but for his deep commitment to compassionate, patient-
centered care within the diverse populations he served across Miami.
His expertise spanned the surgical management of complex cancers, including breast, thyroid,
skin cancers, and soft tissue sarcomas. He was widely recognized for advancing minimally
invasive techniques, consistently striving to improve outcomes while prioritizing patient quality
of life.
Beyond his clinical work, Dr. Paramo was deeply committed to education and mentorship,
values that strongly reflect the mission of the American College of Surgeons. He held academic
appointments as Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at Nova Southeastern University and
Associate Professor of Surgery at Florida International University, where he guided and inspired
countless medical students, residents, and fellows throughout South Florida.
Dr. Paramo’s leadership extended both locally and nationally through his work as a Cancer
Liaison Physician, where he played a vital role in advancing cancer screening, early detection,
and access to high-quality care. His contributions were recognized with the prestigious Cancer
Liaison Physician Outstanding Performance Award from the American College of Surgeons
Commission on Cancer, an honor awarded to only a select group of physicians nationwide and a
testament to his commitment to the standards of our profession.
Despite his many accomplishments, those of us who knew Dr. Paramo will remember him most
for his humility, compassion, and dedication to others. He was a trusted colleague, a devoted
mentor, and a physician who consistently placed his patients at the center of everything he did.
For many within our South Florida surgical community, he set an example of what it means to
lead with both skill and humanity.
Dr. Paramo’s legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched, including his patients, his
students, his colleagues, and his loved ones. His contributions to medicine and to our local
surgical community will not be forgotten, and his example will continue to guide future
generations of surgeons and physicians.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time. As
we mourn his passing, we also celebrate a life defined by service, excellence, mentorship, and
compassion.
With deepest sympathy and respect,
Dana R. Sands, MD, FACS, FASCRS
